Cortland Street resident Savian Kirton of Mount Vernon has been charged with manslaughter for his role in the homicide of Jermial Rose, who was fatally stabbed in the neck outside a deli on South 8th Avenue in Mount Vernon on Saturday, June 1.
Officers from the Mount Vernon Police Department responded to 401 S. 8th Ave. shortly after 5 p.m. on Saturday, where there was a report of a stabbing. Upon arrival, officers found Rose, 38, with a stab wound to the neck. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation led detectives to Kirton, who was arrested on Sunday, June 2.
“I commend the Mount Vernon Police for this swift arrest. Our community is safe and we will continue to ensure the safety of our citizens,” Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas said in a statement.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Jermial’s family and loved ones in this trying time. The Mount Vernon community believes that an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us. Our tight-knit community rejects this targeted, vicious attack and will tirelessly work together with the Mount Vernon Police Department to quickly identify criminal suspects.”
Mount Vernon Police Chief Richton Ziadie added, “the Mount Vernon Police Department will not tolerate any acts of violence and disregard for the law in our city. The men and women of the Mount Vernon Police Department will work vigorously and diligently to bring to justice anyone committing these types of crimes. We extended our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim.”
